The rise of Social Media - the apparent abandonment of Websites

What makes a person stand out? What makes a casting director, producer, director or modelling agencies interested in a particular person? Is it what we can bring to the table, regarding our talents and what we look like? Or alternatively, is it how many followers we have on our Instagram and TikTok profiles?

Look, I don't want to alienate myself or criticise other formats, I assure you that is not my intention. Neither do I have anything against anyone who has a profile on those social media formats, and nor am I belittling or being dismissive, Kudos to them! However, how about those of us who do not, or those of us who are somewhat 'old school' and have not only put time and effort into their websites, but happy and content to promote ourselves in that form, with the freedom to present ourselves in any way we wish.

As I have an acting agency, a wonderful one, who I have an exceptional relationship with, I will speak about modelling agencies. I know there could be a few reasons why I have not (yet) been successful in a modelling agency signing me; not the right look for them. Similar looks already on their book. Height (though not a problem for print work), etc. But, I do wonder if not having any of the two social media formats factor into their decisions. Every agency online form that I have applied to so far, asks for either one or both, and none has a section to include website. Consequently, I am adding my website link into the sections that asks for Instagram or TitTok account.

So I refer to what I wrote in the beginning, what makes a person stand out? Is it what we can bring to the table, regarding our talents and looks, or is it how many followers we have on our social media accounts

?

A quite beautiful shot of you Leonie and some very fair points re websites v social media. It does appear that websites are rather taking a ‘back seat’ to social media, which I think is a shame. A website can express so much more in terms of character, whereas within ‘social media’ we are more like characters within a circus.

Thanks Rol. Exactly my point, websites are taking a 'back seat' to social media. There was a time when having a website held you in high esteem, and it was almost expected that if you wanted to be taken seriously you had to have one.
